I dont own any 3d package eg studio Max so I went to a 3dcafe and downloaded a few of the free models. After unzipping the model importing them into Swift3d has been problematic. Do I need to own a copy of a 3d program before these files will open up or they should be imported regardless? Help me out here yo!

hi cobweb, greetings from flashmove.
you can only import .3ds files into swift3d.
3ds files are a more native format of 3dmax files, if you downloaded the .max files, they may not be imported into swift3d.
To import 3ds files into swift3d, click on the create new button and click on import 3dmax models and your're there! http://flashmove.com/board/images/smilies/wink.gif

glad that help you.
one more thing is to convert .max files to 3ds , you will definately need 3dstudiomax to do it. http://flashmove.com/board/images/smilies/wink.gif
