wwwHello,

something less than good has happened to my flash (fla) file. It is still the same size in MBs it was, but when I open it in the IDE, there is nothing there. The file structure, or headers, or something has gone awry, so the question is: is there any way back?

Probably not - do you have the previous version?

Aye, I've got a backup from about a week ago, but still, it's a week worth's of work gone.

Well... probably not then. You could use a decompiler to try and salvage some bits from the swf, that's about it though. And make sure you save regularly (every session, at least a couple of times, with incrementing numbers so you know where you are up to). Still, closing the metaphorical gate after the horse has taken the bolt and all that..

Yes, I suppose it's my own fault, though I'm still in the denial stage, blaming the cat, the exchange rate, Al Qaeda, etc.

what, not the government? That's my usual one... as I said though, try a decompiler on your swf and see what you come up with. You can get a free version of one or more of them, but they are limited in what they do, otherwise, it may be worth paying for one. Try it first though and see if its worth it for what you can see inside...
good luck.

Tired a decompiler; it returned the Lord of all Messes. (It's a big fla file). Will just have to redo what I lost.

Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

Here's a nice tip for work control:

Make your saves with the workdates in the name.
Ex.: someproject25102004.fla (25th october 2004)
(and the corresponding swf)

Save them ALL (I mean at least 1 for every single day) and store them, no matter how many cds you have to burn for that.

Just a simple work-habit that pays off at every last turn of a project.

You can thank me in 10 years. :compu1:

Cheers,

There are actually additions to flash you can download that will save your project(s) with additional numbers at the end that go in order. Havent looked deeply into it, but could give you the URL for it if u wish. I think there was one that also saved ever 5 minutes for you automatically. Let me know...
