APE (Actionscript Physics Engine) (http://www.cove.org/ape/index.htm) is an AS3 open source 2D physics engine for use in Flash and Flex. APE is written and maintained by Alec Cove.

Do you have to have Flash 9 to use the code?

No.
If you have Adobe Flex 2 Software Development Kit (http://www.adobe.com/products/flex/downloads/), which is free, you can use APE too.
The point is you have to code it in AS3. :)

I got the trial version of flash 9, but it still won't work. It always says that you can't nest packages. And I don't even know what a package is. :o It comes with a giant library that I have no idea on how to use. Does anyone know where there are tutorials for this? Not for Flex 2, but for Flash 9.

packages are collections of classes in its very simplest definition. But you must know how to use them.In fact flash's internal help is also too good to get started. Here is a link to the repository of adobe's tutorials (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/).

The APE used to be called flade. Wonder why it has changed name.

Flade is not the same thing as APE. It is merely an older engine by the same creator.
