the technique (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structured_light) works and is actually relatively simple. here (http://www.volunteerlabrat.com/default.html?goto=scanner.html) is an example for a full 3d version that will not only cover a surface per scan.
i searched for that kind of stuff recently myself because i need something to measure the volume of pretty fragile objects.

Good fine niq. I think it's certainly possible. In fact, there are already 3d model printers that can output your 3d into the real world!
