That’s right, Fireworks Night is our way of remembering the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
It all started when a Catholic conspirator named Guy Fawkes was discovered hiding beneath the House of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder. He was arrested before he had the chance to blow the place to bits whilst King James I was inside.
The people of London – thankful that their king came to no harm – took to the streets in celebration. They lit bonfires to burn effigies of Fawkes.
Since then, the celebrations have continued year after year across the entire country, to ensure no one forgets what happened. You’ll now find exciting firework displays featuring bonfires and all the best kinds of fireworks for your enjoyment.
